Cynical and sarcastic- these are the two best words I can use to describe stand-up comedian Janeane Garofalo. But then again, which comics don’t fit this bill? It’s just that Janeane’s style of humor is so dry, I don’t know if I’d ever be able to have a conversation with her, let alone laugh out loud. I know it’s all part of the act and her way of earning a paycheck, but sometimes it grates on you. Janeane Garofalo: If You Will - Live In Seattle, is the new stand-up special from Ms. G and I’m not gonna lie- it’s not bad. Yes, the opening paragraph sounds like I’m trashing the comedian, but I’m merely setting the table for those unfamiliar with her work and how I feel about her(not like you care, but it would be a lot cooler if you did). Covering topics from politics to sex, Janeane is her usual, ‘one out of every three jokes is funny’ self. I know that every comic needs to have an identity, but Janeane’s has been really hard for me to get into lately because she comes across as ultra-depressed and brings my mood down instead of up. She’s still has the persona and comedic stylings as always, it just seems that the material is darker. She does look good wearing a white tank top, showing off those tattoos. If you are a big fan of hers, not like that’s relevant. You will have no problem enjoying her new DVD; an average fan like myself can go either way. With a running time of a little over an hour, ‘If You Will’ definitely seemed like it ran a lot longer. Take that comment however you want, but Janeane is pretty much Janeane. Michael J.
