In the same vein as the classic film The Big Chill, Helena from the Wedding is a story about a group of friends that reunite for New Year’s Eve at a remote cabin in the woods. Of the group, there are three married couples, then one single female and one single male friend. At first glance, these people embrace each other as close, great friends, but upon further examination, there is trouble brewing amongst the crew.

Although the story was at times riveting, there was such sadness beyond the facades of the friendships that it felt more depressing than anything. From cheating to jealousy to control-issues, any true friendships or relationships that were presented were challenged or falsified as the film went on. Some highlights were the performances of Jessica Hecht and Melanie Lynskey - both of the portrayals of their characters were as meaningful and touching as could be. In truth, I wish the film would have been a bit longer so that the characters could have had more time to develop.

Coming to theaters in November, Helena from the Wedding is an intriguing film from promising up and coming director Joseph Infantolino.
