Anvil: The Story Of Anvil, is a hilarious but sometimes somber documentary that tells the tale of Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and Robb Reiner- two friends from Toronto who met at age 14 and started one of the most well-known heavy metal bands of the 80’s. In 1982, Anvil was formed and ‘Metal On Metal’ was released- an album which went on to influence the likes of metal giants such as Anthrax, Metallica and Slayer. But, these bands went on to acheive international fame while Anvil was basically the best ‘opening’ band on the scene, never acheiving the same recognition. Well, Anvil never went away and the documentary is based on small and current worldwide performances as well as the recording of their new album. The film shows not only the struggles Steve and Robb have gone through over the years dealing with the music business, but the hardships that their families must go through as a result of being related to these ‘over-aged’ hard rockers, now in their 50’s. The movie is light-hearted and entertaining with a great soundtrack(it helps if you like Anvil) and is definitely worth viewing. It’s kind of like a real-life version of ‘Spinal Tap’, just not quite as comical. Directed by Sacha Gervasi, special features include: Michael J. Nicholas - a.k.a. Nicky The Note - reviews, opinions & life lessons. Got a problem? E-mail us at filmmonthly@gmail.com |
