Rental Magica II

| October 9, 2012

Rental Magica II, being the second half of the series, is an altogether different experience. The story lines focus more on the characters. This is not to say they do not go and fight, on the other hand there may be even more fighting present but the affect it has on the story lines is not the same. This set is a truly fulfilling experience.

Itsuki has to decide what kind of president he is going to be while also figuring out how he is going to be a contributing member of the Astral. Itsuki learns that the only thing he has to work with is his glam sight, the one thing that can also destroy him. All the while, Honomi is looking for a way to cure Itsuki of the glam sight, which she blames herself for. We are also introduced to new characters, one who is a true help and another who proclaims to be.

The characters are fully realized in this part of the series, not only as individuals but also as a team. We learn more about a few of the characters pasts and get a glimpse of their futures. Itsuki’s begins to take a greater investment in Astral and its members. This is not to say that he did not care for them in the past, but now he takes greater risks and leads more forcefully. At the same time, he remains the lovable goof who always forgets to study his magic lessons. It is not an easy feat to maintain a character as well as allow them to grow naturally. Rental Magica II does just that.

On other anime series of late, I have complained that the end of the show is not fulfilling. There tends to be one episode too many. Now this can be attributed to contracting obligations and other marketing things we have no control over, but it is still a complaint. This is not one that I have with Rental Magica II. When I finished the last episode I felt like I was left in a perfect position; satisfied yet wanting more.

This Nozomi release of Rental Magica II has Japanese language with on screen English subtitles. The features included in the set is the ability to watch Rental Magica in either broadcast or chronological order,  special promo two, commercial spots two, clean opening two, clean closing two, U.S. part one trailer, web commercials and Nozomi trailers.
