What makes today’s legal and medical dramas enticing is that many times the weekly plots are ripped from the headlines, from the nightly news we’ll watch right after the drama, or from the local paper we’ll pick up the next morning. This week’s episode of Raising the Bar, “No Child’s Left Behind,” is no different, and with a subject matter that definitely makes you think and raises a lot of interesting questions.

Jerry (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) is representing the father in a criminal case as he’s being charged with child endangerment and sexual performance by a child. Nick (Currie Graham) is representing the State. The father is divorced from the mother of the child, and during one of the times his young son was staying with him, he snapped a picture of the little boy getting out of the bathtub naked. Completely innocent, you say? Wait until you hear what happens next and where the State goes with this.

The dad posts the picture on his personal website that is accessible by the public on a page called “Friends and Family.” Later, the picture ends up on a child pornography site, but instead of going after that webmaster, the law goes after the dad. He’s charged with these felonies with the guise that he left his child unprotected by posting that picture on the internet for anyone to take at their liking. The State agrees to settle out of court with no jail time, but in return they want the father to register as a sex offender. This isn’t acceptable to the dad. He’s already lost his job and custody of his son over this matter. His ex is siding with the State. He and Jerry refuse to settle and take the matter to a jury, knowing they’re taking their chances.

Everyone debates this case from the lawyers, to the judges, to the family involved, both inside the courtroom and outside. It definitely leaves you thinking afterward, deciding which side of the case you sit on and how far from each edge. Absolutely no one in that courtroom believed this father was a danger to his son or any other child for that matter, yet it proceeds.

It’ll make you think a little bit the next time you post a picture online, won’t it?

Catch this episode of Raising the Bar on TNT Monday, June 29, at 10:00 PM EST.
