I was so excited to have The Closer back on their air, yet now the season is coming to an end, after just three quick episodes. I must admit they’ve been worth it though. We’ve had great storylines and a great guest star in Beau Bridges. And now we have one of the better recurring characters showing up on the season finale December 21, Brenda’s (Kyra Sedgwick) arch nemesis, Capt. Raydor (Mary McDonnell).

Capt. Raydor comes to the Major Crimes unit and asks for a special favor. One of her detectives has shown up for work with evidence on her body which looks to be certain spousal abuse. She would like Brenda and the Major Crimes Unit’s help in looking into the situation and getting down to the bottom. She does believe the detective’s explanation that she “fell.”

Because it’s Capt. Raydor and Brenda, they of course don’t get along from the minute they begin discussing this situation. Capt. Raydor always wants everything to be by the book, yet in this instance wants Brenda to bend the rules. Brenda refuses to bend the rules. She doesn’t want to interview the husband and only questions the detective, who again denies anything. That night, the detective ends up injured again, calls 911, and the husband is shot and killed by the first officer to the scene.

It presents an interesting predicament. Capt. Raydor is of course livid with Brenda, accusing her of not taking it more seriously. She feels that had Brenda talked to the husband, he would still be alive. It does nothing to help their relationship. Her other relationship that’s hurting is with husband Fritz (Jon Tenney). Brenda is gone and tied up all the time with work, leaving Joel the kitten as his only companion. While you would think this FBI agent would understand, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

At the time I viewed the episode I didn’t know it was the end of the season. However, knowing that, I see that instead of the episode being open-ended, it’s left us with somewhat of a cliffhanger.

You can catch this season finale of The Closer on TNT  on December 21.
