Tonight’s a night that many people are waiting for, Cagney and Lacey to reunite. Well, not their characters, but the actresses, Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly. Gless has been appearing on Burn Notice on USA as Michael’s chain-smoking mom, and tonight she gets featured a little more than usual when her son needs her help with a case.

As the show identifies him, a “bloodthirsty hooligan” shot up Michael’s “agency contact,” and Fiona got shot in the arm as well. She had been on her way home to Ireland, and now that she’s identified as an American spy, she can’t go back. Because of the shot in her arm, she can’t take a case she had agreed to take, which is puzzling to everyone since she had been on her way out of the country.

“The client” is a woman whose husband has just been killed in a car accident. It wasn’t a pure accident, though. They had been short on cash, so he was doing a job for an “insurance scammer” where he was supposed to cause an accident and get hurt. It went horribly wrong, obviously. Now the insurance scammer is after her to pay the money they should have gotten from the deal anyway.

Michael takes the case for Fiona, but they can’t get any of the paperwork they need, so Michael sends his mom to do the job, saying the woman they need to get the papers from is “your age, smokes your brand, and shops at the same stores you do.” The woman, played by Daly, of course falls for Gless’ lines. The problem is, Gless has so much fun with her, she invites her over for canasta and gin and tonics, a definite problem for Michael that she’s cavorting with a contact like that.

With the paperwork they need, Michael gets himself hired as another driver by the insurance scammer, as he sets his plan in motion to expose them and get them to lay off his client. At the same time, he’s being chased by someone that has something to do with his agency contact getting shot. He has no idea who it is, but the calling card the guy left was blowing up a hotel building. His way of introducing himself to Michael was an interesting way of saying hello.

It looks like a great way to reintroduce the third season of Burn Notice. Look for other great guest stars throughout including Chris Vance, Danny Trejo, Jason Vargas, Spencer Garrett, Tim Matheson, Seth Peterson, Rick Kelly, Carlos Bernard, Garret Dillahunt and more.
