Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009)

| April 8, 2010

ALVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The troublemaking chipmunk is ready to come home with you on DVD and Blu-ray. In this sequel, Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) must go to school after Alvin’s attention hogging concert trick lands Dave (Jason Lee) in a full body cast in the hospital. The boys are left in the care of their Aunt, who winds up in the hospital because of Dave’s careless cousin, Toby (Zachary Levi). The trio, now being cared for by Toby without Dave‘s knowledge, attend school like every other kid their age.
Alvin, Simon and Theodore find no trouble when it comes to the ladies, but nothing but it when it comes to the guys who used to be the center of attention. This jealousy leads the boys to the principal’s office, played by Wendie Malick, who happens to be a huge Chipmunks fan. She convinces the three of them to enter into a music competition to save the school’s music program.
However, when the newly discovered Chipettes, Brittany (Christina Applegate), Eleanor (Amy Poehler) and Jeanette (Anna Faris), are discovered by the Chipmunks’ ex-manager Ian, he enrolls them in the same school as the boys in an attempt to crush the three that ruined him while rebuilding his failed career. The Chipmunks and Chipettes battle for the chance to save the school’s music program while fighting back romantic tensions.
This film will hold the interest of children of all ages though it lacks the same comedic moments that were in the first Alvin & The Chipmunks. The movie tries to bring comedy into the story by putting the boys in a new environment, but so many other elements diffuse that potential. The boys deal with new competition, individual identities, family issues, missing Dave while he’s in the hospital and dealing with an immature adult cousin watching over them. There’s too much happening story-wise to make it a fulfilling movie to watch. Still, with tons of special features, children will be entertained for hours with a sing-a-long, dance-a-long and more.
Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel was released by Fox Home Entertainment on March 30th.
