RiffTrax Live: Anaconda

| November 1, 2014

Hollywood is a magical, yet mercurial place. Anyone can write a screenplay, no matter how farfetched, and have it turned into a feature length film. Sometimes, big studios fall prey to the promise of a big name attached to the project (such as Jon Voight). For example: how about a group of young fimmakers looking to make a name for themselves by traveling down the Amazon River to make a nature documentary. Along the way they run into a ruthless big snake hunter (Voight) looking for a big payday. Along the way, they run into prehistoric level snakes and mayhem ensues. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the travesty known as Anaconda. How can this be movie be remotely watchable? It isn’t, until you bring in the RiffTrax crew!

RiffTrax Live: Anaconda is the next chapter of entertainment brought to you by the hilarious minds of the RiffTrax crew (Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy). Lately, the gang over at RiffTrax have really upped their game by getting the opportunity to riff on really bad, big budget movies. Thanks to successful Kickstarter campaigns, RiffTrax fans have had the distinct privilege to see travesties such as Starship Troopers and the 1998 version of Godzilla get the proper treatment these movies deserve. And Anaconda…yikes. To its credit, Anaconda does have an eclectic, normally entertaining cast, led by Academy Award winning actor Jon Voight. The cast also has what was then a young group that would come to be a major part of the entertainment industry (Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson), as well as rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube. Sadly, the convoluted script, editing gaffes, and not-so-special effects leave this movie a complete mess. And all of those problems lead to comedy gold for the RiffTrax crew! For example, Bill Corbett correctly points out that a waterfall is flowing up! The only way I could ever recommend watching this nightmare is with Mike, Bill, and Kevin unleashing their genius upon it.

Fathom Events once again comes through in a big way with RiffTrax Live: Anaconda. The October 30 showing was perfect for a night before Halloween viewing. If you missed it, don’t despair. You’ll get another opportunity to see the hilarity on November 4. And make sure to get there on time to catch the short Halloween Party. Truly bizarre and highly entertaining, thanks to the comic minds of Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy, the RiffTrax crew.
