RiffTrax Live: Sharknado 2 – The Second One

| July 13, 2015

Have you ever had a plate of food placed in front of you, which looked intriguing but lacked a little flavor? Movies have been known to do the very same thing. Take for example the SYFY made-for-TV Sharknado series. On the surface, these films look like they could be a complete nightmare. But when you add that little sprinkle of flavor, a.k.a. the RiffTrax Live treatment, uncertainty turns into comedy gold.

The Sharknado movie series was tailor made for riffing. The absurd premise, the C,D, and E list celebrity “stars” and cameos, equates to perfect comedic fodder for the RiffTrax crew (Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy). RiffTrax Live: Sharknado was a hysterical evening. The most impressive aspect of RiffTrax Live: Sharknado 2: The Second One is that it pulled off an almost feat: it was funnier than the first. How often does a sequel surpass the original? Mike, Bill, and Kevin were on fire July 9, 2015 (almost literally). Not only were they on point the entire evening, but the air conditioning in the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee was non-existent! Our brave trio of riffers were sweating profusely throughout the show. But, as the old saying goes, “the show must go on”.

The program began with a riff of an old short film entitled Parents, Who Needs Them? Quite the bizarre little film, meant to teach children to appreciate all of the little things their parents do for them on a daily basis. But, to continue my food analogy, it was time for the main course. Not only was RiffTrax Live: Sharknado 2: The Second One better than RiffTrax Live: Sharknado, I would dare say it was the funniest RiffTrax Live event to date. I had a friend accompany me to the show at my local multiplex. This gentleman has been my friend for some 10+ years. In all of that time, I had never seen him laugh any harder than he did during RiffTrax Live: Sharknado 2: The Second One.

Fathom Events once again presents RiffTrax Live. Sharknado 2: The Second One is, fittingly enough, the second in a four riff series in 2015 known as “The Crappening”. The first in the series was Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, with Miami Connection to follow in October and Santa and The Ice Cream Bunny in December. If you happened to miss the live showing of RiffTrax Live: Sharknado 2: The Second One, fear not! There will be an encore showing Thursday night, July 16. Check your local theatre listings or go to www.FathomEvents.com for more details. RiffTrax Live: Sharknado 2: The Second One is a comedy event that is not to be missed. And, make sure you show up half an hour early for onscreen trivia, as well as shark themed songs and links to some digital goodies.
