HawthoRNe Series Premiere On TNT

| May 26, 2009

This past season we watched one of the most respected and watched medical dramas of all time ease off the air after being a staple on our Thursday night “Must See TV” nights. ER set the bar very high over the years, and now every medical drama that comes after will be judged against it, a mixture of great medical drama as well as personal drama of the characters. Sadly, viewing a premiere copy of the series premiere of HawthoRNe, it just doesn’t measure up the same.

Jada Pinkett-Smith has the starring role, as Christina Hawthorne, the Chief Nursing Officer at the hospital. Honestly, this woman is doing and dealing with too much, and I deal with that in my group of friends. I wanted to tell her the same thing I tell my friends. Slow down. Worry about what’s important and take care of yourself instead of everyone else.

Christina lost her husband a year ago to cancer. It’s now just her and their rebellious teenage daughter. In the first five minutes of the show, she can’t sleep as it’s the anniversary of her husband’s death, she gets called to the hospital on an emergency, gets begged by a homeless woman to come see her new find, tries to talk a man off the roof, and gets arrested for assault. I wanted to yell out to her that we’ve learned that we don’t have to do it all. We might be able to have it all, but who wants it?

Pinkett-Smith is supported in the cast with character actors playing fellow nurses as well as doctors, and so far the one person that has the strongest personality to stand next to someone with the star power of Pinkett-Smith is the homeless woman. It was like Christina was so busy doing everyone else’s jobs, they didn’t have anything to do. She was like Mark Greene, Doug Ross, John Carter, and Carol Hathaway all rolled into one. Need I point out that Pinkett-Smith is not just the lead actress but the executive producer as well?

The whole thing was exhausting to me and made me feel I needed a nap when I got done. I got it that they wanted her to be this really strong character, but they just had her doing way too much. You don’t have to do it all to be strong. Life will go on in the hospital with or without her. That was the ending message of ER. Life goes on, no matter what. It just seemed as if Christina needs to learn that as well.

HawthoRNe premiers on TNT on Tuesday, June 16.
