Evil Ed

Disgusting, bloody, over-the-top, cheesy one liners, entertaining, hilarious, homage. Is it possible for all of the above words and phrases accurately describing one movie? Absolutely! The Swedish team of Anders Jacobsson, Goran Lundstrom, Kaj Steveman, Anders Jacobsson, and Doc brought their love of ‘70’s and ‘80’s horror to life in 1995 in the form of Evil Ed.

Evil Ed is the story of Ed, a film editor who is very good at his job. Ed works on more artsy black and white films, until an unfortunate incident leads Ed to being transferred to the “Splatter and Gore” department. While hesitant, Ed dives into the editing of the “Loose Limbs” series for European distribution. Due to various foreign regulations, numerous scenes of blood and guts have to be trimmed down.

After pressure from his boss (“where in the fuck is my beaver rape scene?”), as well as watching countless hours of breasts and body parts, Ed begins to feel ill, both physically and mentally. He even begins to hallucinate, seeing a weird Gremlin-esque creature in his refrigerator. After two more hallucinations appear (Bondage Face and White Demon) Ed finally snaps, and the carnage begins.

Evil Ed premiered on November 11, 1995 at the Stockholm International Film Festival. The film unfortunately did not get a wide release in Sweden until 1997. During the long wait, the antiquated Swedish censorship policies begin to loosen, which would lead to the 2011 abolishment of the censorship board.

Evil Ed garnered a cult following around the world thanks to the home video market. Starting in 2011, the Ed team began work on the special Ed-ition of the movie, which would include a pivotal balcony scene that was a personal favorite of the crew. After 5 long years, the project saw its completion.

Arrow US has done it again. Their 3 disc Blu-Ray/DVD set of Evil Ed is one of their best releases to date. The set includes 2 Blu-Rays and one DVD. The first Blu-Ray and the DVD include the Special Ed-ition of the film, as well as the Keep ‘Em Heads Rollin’ making-of documentary, a featurette on the creation of the Special EDition cut, deleted scenes, bloopers, teasers and trailers, and a still gallery. The second Blu-Ray in the 3-Disc Limited Edition includes the Original Cut of the movie, as well as a never-before-seen 3 hour making of documentary and cast & crew interview bloopers.

Evil Ed is a cult horror flick with a small but loyal following. After buying this set and watching not only both versions of the movie, as well as the hours of special features, you, dear reader, will surely join their ranks. After the first 3 minutes of the movie, I was hooked.
