Bullhead, or Rundskop as it’s called in its native Belgium, is such a strong and powerful film that it can be a bit hard to watch. It is the story of a man who suffered a severely traumatic event as a young boy, one which changed the outcome of his life forever. With a family of cattle farmers who are engaged in illegally injecting steroids into their animals to produce larger, more expensive cattle and therefore earn more at auction, Jacky, the young leading male, grows up around drugs and around a family of criminals who accept him for who he is, and it is in large part because of this that his emotional side remains in stasis, frozen in arrested development, while the boy grows into a man of great muscular shape and size, fed by the very steroids which he injects into his cattle.

Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts) became reliant on steroids and hormones following that childhood trauma. After initiating a sady deal with a notorious Mafioso meat trader, circumstances lead him down a twisted road of vengeance and tormet. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his horrid past resurfaces, Jacky must confront far-reaching consequences and determine whether the true meaning of manhood is one of hormones or emotions.

Bullhead was an Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language film in 2012 and gained critical acclaim at festivals around the world, including the AFI Film Festival, the Berlin Film Festival, Fantasia, and Fantasic Fest.
