Luther, Season 2 releases today, October 25th, on DVD. This amazing series from the BBC follows Detective Chief Inspector John Luther as he tangles with some of London’s most bizarre and unusual crimes. Season 1 saw him going toe-to-toe with the beautiful but warped and extremely deadly Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), an ultra intelligent young woman who killed her parents in the first episode and walks. Luther knows she’s guilty, he just can’t prove it. She remains in Luther’s life just long enough to tease and torment him. Season 2 sees Alice is still around, but this time she is something less of an adversary as it seems the detective has come to terms with at least one demon in his life.
Idris Elba (The Wire, The Losers) expands his gritty role as John Luther, a near-genius detective struggling with his own demons. Devastated by his wife’s brutal murder, Luther returns to policing in the newly created Serious and Serial unit under the guidance of former police complaints officer Martin Schenk, prepared to solve some of London’s most brutal murders. Luther is tasked by with putting together a team and quickly rescues his old partner Detective Justin Ripley from the drudgery of uniform.
Luther is something of a genius when it comes to knowing people and investigating criminals. He is obsessive, possessed, and sometimes dangerous in the violence of his fixations. But Luther has paid a heavy price for his dedication; he has never been able to prevent himself from being consumed by the darkness of the crimes with which he deals. For Luther, the job always comes first. His dedication is a curse and a blessing for him and those close to him.
Luther is a very beautifully filmed program and the episodes in Season 2 are just as exciting and intriguing as those of Season 1, once you get past the realization that his greatest nemesis - Alice Morgan - is his most trusted ally. But Detective Chief Inspector Luther is one of the most original and exciting creations in television of the past decade, a character rivaling that of Dexter, Jane Tennant, and all the other outstanding stars of contemporary crime television. If you haven’t seen Luther before, do get caught up as quickly as possible, for a third season has been commissioned by the BBC and you will not want to miss it!
A highly acclaimed psychological crime drama, crackling with energy and snappy dialogue and originally seen on BBC America.
