Superman Returns: The Complete Shooting Script

| July 21, 2006

In book form, here is the shooting script for the latest superhero film to make it to the big screen, Superman Returns. While the book comes in at 340 pages, I’m sure the final script wasn’t that long, especially since the book contains a number of very nicely done storyboards, plus input from the screenwriters and director. Although a number of scenes were edited out of the final cut, you’ll find them here.
I believe scripts are a great way to learn how a film is made, and this one is no exception. When you can study a book like this, and compare the script to the storyboards and the film itself, then you can truly see the decisions of the filmmakers and, especially with the comments of the screenwriters and director, the choices can be quite intriguing. And scripts can be especially revealing of dialogue, and the choices in casting can be very educational in an actor’s interpretation of the meaning of the words. For budding filmmakers, screenwriters, lovers of Superman or Bryan Singer’s films, Superman Returns: The Complete Shooting Script is a very good little book to have.
For those of you who may not yet have seen the film, here’s the synopsis:
Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in the epic action-adventure Superman Returns. While an old enemy plots to render him powerless once and for all, Superman faces the heartbreaking realization that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life. Superman’s bittersweet return challenges him to bridge the distance between them while finding a place in a society that has learned to survive without him. In an attempt to protect the world he loves from destruction, Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space. This is the full, original screenplay to the new movie, along with storyboards and exclusive input from the screenwriters and director.
