What is with this scary trend of Best Actress winners who follow up with crap movies after winning Oscar gold? Halle Berry starred in Catwoman and Gothika. Charleze Theron starred in Aeon Flux. Helen Hunt starred in Dr. T and the Women (one of the worst movies I have ever seen). Helen Mirren is slated to star in the National Treasure sequel (why?). And now Hilary Swank has picked winners like The Core and The Reaping to follow her awards. She should put copies of both movies next to her two Oscars. Cause and effect ladies and gentlemen, is what we have here. She must have made a fortune to star in such duds. What won’t actors do for a paycheck? The Reaping is a poorly executed been there done that story, in a genre crowded with bad remakes (or re-imaginings) that you can find at Best Buy in the bargain bin for 5 bucks.

Hillary Swank plays Katherine Winter, who specializes in disproving religious miracles. So after the small town of Haven suffers from some strange behavior (a river of blood), she is hired to investigate what the heck is going on. Winter is your typical movie character in the “I’ve lost my faith because of some tragic accident that happened to my parents” sort of way. The clichés don’t stop at the characters either.

So after frogs fall from the sky, Winter slowly begins to question on whether or not there is an answer for these strange occurrences, which are identical to the ten plagues in the bible. The townspeople think the cause of all this is from a small girl, and they want her dead. The story slowly starts to fall apart from here. There are a handful of flashbacks of Winter’s past which try to help with her back story. That fails in doing so, but it does succeed in destroying any pacing the film had. The acting isn't that great either, especially coming from a two-time Best Actress winner. The plagues themselves aren’t all that interesting to watch, they did a very poor job on emphasizing how damn scary they could have been.

The story becomes a re-hash of Rosemary’s Baby, The Omen, and The Exorcist with a ridiculous ending. But really, no one should be surprised, as this is the work of the writers who penned the mastery that is House of Wax. Swank obviously did this one for the paycheck. It does sadden me that Stephen Hopkins decided to direct this turd (He directed many of the episodes of season 1 of 24).

Don’t go see this film. If you like Hillary Swank, don’t go see this film. If you like horror films or stories about the occult, you should still stay away. This won’t be in theaters for very long, it craps its pants on so many levels that by June, you probably will be able to buy this new for 9.99 or wait a month and get it at Best Buy in the bargain bin.

Grade: D-
