The Ice Harvest is the newest film from comedy writing and directing LEGEND Harold Ramis (Caddy Shack, Analyze This). The Ice Harvest stars John Cusack as Charlie Arglist a mob lawyer living in Kansas who decides to steal from his mob bosses on Christmas Eve. Charlie has the plan but no guts so he enlists a shady strip club owner named Vic played by Billy Bob Thornton to help carry out the deed. The Ice Harvest is an entertaining dark comedy about two not so bright characters that attempt to pull off a crime caper for quick riches. Comedy and tragedy ensues of course. But understand this isn't a straight comedy but more of an Elmore Leonard style drama with elements of a very dark comedy.
John Cusack as Charlie Arglist plays what should be a very unlikable character, he...s a lawyer for the mob, a thief, divorced after discovering his wife was sleeping with his best friend who he...s still friends with and never sees his children who are obviously in need for his attention, but still yet he...s somehow likeable. I relate his character here to his character in Gross Pointe Blank when he played a loveable depressed hitman. Or wait, wasn...t he lovable and depressed in High Fidelity also? Let...s go way back to Better Off Dead when he was a depressed teenager. Hmmm.... I...m discovering an obvious trend here. A character like this is what Cusack does so well and he does it again here. I...m also sure if you try ever so slightly you can imagine the grace that Billy Bob brings to the screen as Vic the strip club owner. Yes, Vic as you...ll discover is a real scumbag. A very drunk Oliver Platt provides most of the comedic moments as Pete Van. Pete is the man who took over Charlie...s life and now hates himself and wants out. Round the cast out with femme fatale Connie Nielson and Randy Quaid playing a mobster. This is definitely one of the darker ...films on director Harold Ramiss resume. It...s also a risk taker because this is a film where the main characters are not the greatest people in world and they are doing bad things to Here...s the Bottom Line: This is Harold Ramis...s new movie. Go see it! This is the same guy who wrote Animal House, Ghostbusters and Back to School! This is the same guy that directed Caddyshack, Vacation, Groundhog Day and Analyze This! So all the know it all twenty something film students worshipping Wes Anderson...s comedic styling and gloating about the "There...s Something About Mary" sequel you want to make listen up because here is another film in the library of Harold Ramis...s 25 year plus film career. Give it a chance it...s delicious. Gary Schultz is a filmmaker and writer living in Chicago. Check out his interview with Harold Ramis right here at Film Monthly.

So did you see Bad Santa? Did the idea of a Christmas themed dark comedy appeal to you? If so, take a run at The Ice Harvest. It is not so much that it is a Christmas movie - it is hardly A Charlie Brown Christmas, it is more that it takes place on Christmas Eve and Christmas day so it is allowed certain plot twists - that makes it a darn funny movie. John Cusack (Pushing Tin, Grosse Pointe Blank, The Grifters) plays Charlie Arglist, a lawyer who works for the seedier side of society. He has, with the help of a local pornographer (Billy Bob Thornton plays Vic Cavanaugh), stolen just over $2 million from his boss and is about to blow town. At the beginning, Charlie talks about how the plan works perfectly if you look at every detail and arrange for everything to go as planned. But we see almost immediately that not every angle has been covered and he may have a problem with his erstwhile partner in crime. It seems that Arglist's boss has figured out the plan and has sent "enforcer" Roy Gelles (Mike Starr from every mob movie ever made) to take care of the problem.
There is one bit of description that will not give away any of the plot that gives you the best example of this movie. At one point, Cavanaugh describes his wife as being on the Subway diet - she eats two foot longs for lunch and another two for dinner. Later on, as a way of explaining how his wife got shot, he describes to Arglist that Gelles had counted on him having more than affectionate feelings for his wife to make him give up where the money has been hidden.
I very much recommend this movie because of the cast. Cusack is a perfectly dry straight man. Think of his role in The Grifters, The Sure Thing, or High Fidelity. Thornton begins as a very trustworthy friend but we think quickly that, hey, he is stealing $2 million with Arglist - he probably is more into ending up with the full amount than half. But we are never quite sure, and that is why Thornton's performance is so great. The femme fatale - because there is always one in a mob caper - is played by Connie Nielson (Basic, One Hour Photo). I kept seeing her as Kathleen Turner in The War of the Roses or maybe Jessica Rabbit. Either way, very sexy and ate up the screen. Watch how Ramis lights her - it is exquisite. Oliver Platt (The West Wing) plays Arglist's friend who is oblivious to what is happening, probably because he spends the movie drunk off his bottom. Randy Quaid (Vegas/Christmas Vacation, Independence Day) is the boss who is being robbed. My only problem with his performance, is he was taking too long to shoot the person he wanted to shoot and that made it obvious to me he was going to get shot.
So if you have ever wanted to spend the holidays in a strip club, or in a bar, or killing a bunch of people in order to make your getaway with $2 million, take a look at The Ice Harvest as a way of starting your plan. And your holiday season. Hank Yuloff is our senior staff writer based in Los Angeles. Got a problem? Email us at filmmonthly@hotmail.com |
