Finally, at long-last the first "great" comedy of 2005 has arrived. Sure, we've gotten close with Wedding Crashers and House of Wax but we can now crown a winner here. The 40 Year-Old Virgin is not only the funniest movie of the year, but its one of the funniest movies EVER MADE.
I shant waste time explaining the plot of the movie, as it is well-summarized in it title. Excellent, this gives me more time to praise the flick because it damn well deserves it. Steve Carell stars as Andy, the 40 year-old virgin. He does a fantastic job as Carell looks like a virgin in real life anyway. But his acting skills and comedic timing are top-notch, as he's backed up by a talented cast including Paul Rudd and the black dude from Weeds (on Showtime for you poor people out there). The screenplay is just relentless with its humor, leaving very little breaks in laughter all the way through. I mean, I was already a skinny little bitch before I saw this, but I think I lost about 20 pounds from laughing so hard. My face still hurts from smiling two hours straight. I could go on and on... and I think I will!
I know that lately I've been giving the thumbs up to things like Dukes of Hazzard and Deuce Bigalow, but seeing this flick reminded me of what a FUNNY movie used to be like. While I got a good portion of humor from Wedding Crashers, this flick simply blows it out of the park. The writing is sharp (thanks to co-writer Carell), the timing is fast-paced (always good for a comedy), and even the set pieces were a hoot. I really got the sense that this guy's never been laid before with all his G.I. Joes and other 80's action figures. Its one of those rare films that has so many classic moments I can't even think of any to mention. But even more importantly, this movie has a lot of heart underneath the filth. You just felt sorry for Andy and how he's lived his life as a pathetic loser, and you're truly happy for him when he begins to succeed in love and sex. I felt the transformation he went through thanks to the brilliant Steve Carell.
I could go on all day about how this movie rocks, but you're just gonna have to see it for yourself. I predict that the movie will have great word of mouth and probably make a gazillion dollars- and rightfully so. The 40 Year-Old Virgin isn't just another typical raunch-fest... it should be entered into The Classic Hall of Fame for R-rated comedies right next to Porky's and Animal House. Don't wait for the DVD! Go now!!!
