This movie year is unlike any in the last 8 since I began writing for FilmMonthly in 1999 with a scathing report on how fucked up I thought the Blair Witch project was that they had substituted hype for substance - "scariest film ever" my ass.

Damn, one sentence and I am already digressing. Its been that kind of year. The little goddaughter is now 2 ½ and demands most of my prime weekend movie watching time, so for the first time in this century, I think I only saw 40+ movies on the big screen instead of the normal high sixties. What this means is that my "I Missed it But NEEEED to see it" list is gonna be larger than ever. I am noticing, though, that I am looking for films to take her to, and that is scary for a guy who loves to see tits on the screen. Time to change THAT habit. And to join Netflix.

I should have known it was going to be a weird year because 2007 began with my first review being Alpha Dog. Man am I the wrong demographic for that movie. What a piece of total shit. We were 12 days in and I already had a movie on my worst of the year list. And as you will see, it was the worst movie I saw this year. Maybe thats why I didn't see that many - I got scared off early. But on the other hand, I did not see that many movies I got to (I mean HAD to) write bad reviews about. When the time is limited, life is too short to take a chance on movies that will most likely "just suck."

And with that, lets see what we get. I am almost as excited to write this one as any I have in many years.

LOVED IT (these are my favorites in approximate order)

Charlie Wilson's War - My god, this was funny. Phillip Seymour Hoffman continues to be my favorite actor.

The Great Debaters - The "I Am Not Gay For Denzel" portion of my LOVED IT List part 1

Juno - My guilty secret movie that everyone has heard about - this years Little Miss Sunshine.

Reign Over Me - an early contender - In March I said it would be on my top 10. YEP, here it is!

Michael Clayton - It seems that we are going to get an Oscar (tm) worthy film every year from Mr. Clooney.

Atonement - should be nominated. The kind of film that has won Best Picture (tm) many times.

Waitress - Just a very sweet movie - made me laugh and shed a couple tears

American Gangster - The "I Am Not Gay For Denzel" portion of my LOVED IT List part 2

Persipolis - Great animation

The Wind That Shakes The Barley

Minorly Appreciated

Music and Lyrics - Yea, I am a big fan of Drew. And Hugh.

There Will Be Blood - The ending left me curiously wondering what the fuck the director meant.

First Snow - great little indy flick.

Alvin and the Chipmunks - A throwback to when I was a kid and loved the ÔMunks

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep - A kid's movie with just enough to be appreciated by parents.

Georgia Rule - Good enough to like, Lohan's line about fucking every one of that one girls boyfriends was classic.

I Am Legend - Too much Zombie, Not enough Save the Earth.

Knocked Up - Damn Funny.

Oceans 13 - And I will see the 14th, too.

The Simpsons - I got EXACTLY what I expected out of this film. Great laughs.

The Kingdom - Bad casting kept this off my top 10 list.

Zodiac - I remember being completely in the mood to see this, but it left me a bit bothered.

MOVIES THAT WASTED MY TIME

Because I Said So

Fred Claus

Farce of the Penguins

Evan Almighty - Just not funny enough to match the hype

Next

Premonition (take off the last 5 minutes and this moves up a catagory)

Sweeny Todd - Waaaaaay too gross. Way too much blood.

HATED IT

Alpha Dog - WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR.

I Think I Love My Wife - I love Chris Rock's stand up. This movie removed his balls.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End - I wanted to poke my eyes out. I wonder if this means I am no longer a Johnny Depp fan.

Daddy Day Camp - people who make movies like this should not be allowed to make movies.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story - I just didnt get it.

License to Wed - My review had 10 reasons not to see this movie.

Blair Witch Project - Worst Movie Ever

HOLY FUCK, I MISSED THAT MOVIE?

The Astronaut Farmer

Black Snake Moan

Grindhouse

Sicko

Ghost Rider

Transformers

Rendition

Fantastic Four

The Kite Runner

Redacted

MY LITTLE MOVIE GOING PARTNER SAID SHE LOVED THESE (and so did I) :

Bee Movie

Shrek 3

Mr. Margorium's Magic Emporium

Ratatouille

The most often heard comment to me "Daddy, stop talking to me, I am watching the Moooovie." I am raising the second generation of FM reviewers! Holy fuck, have I become the Kids Movie Reviewer for FM? God, just fuck me now. And that word cost me another two more dollars into the college fund.
